21 Things Introduction

This 21things4students (21t4s) Project was developed to:

  • help students build technology skills
  • help prepare students for success in their education, and future jobs
  • promote lifelong learning experiences and practices

You will have opportunities to:

  • Build important basic skills with word processing,  spreadsheets, presentations and web search skills.
  • •Be creative with digital images, visuals, storytelling, QR codes and multimedia.• Explore careers, programming, game and app design.
  • Know how to be safe online with CSI-like skills for evaluating online sites, troubleshooting, protecting your digital footprint.
  • Improve your organizational, file management and social networking skills.

The 21 Things are aligned with national standards for technology and curriculum.

Thing #1 Basic Orientation

This section contains basic skill information and terminology, which will help students
complete the other 20 things.
● Learning Objectives
1. be able to confidently navigate the 21things4students website
2. understand how to download a file from the 21things4students website and save it to
their file space
3. be able to take a screenshot on a PC, Mac, and/or iPad
4. know basic shortcuts for a PC, Mac, and/or iPad
5. understand the importance of typing in their future lives and be aware of the free
resources on the internet they can use to improve their skills
6. be able to summarize three key points from their school’s Acceptable Use of
Technology Policy
7. know the characteristics of a strong password and understand the importance of
keeping passwords safe and secure
8. be able to identify the web browser they are using at school and how to confidently
navigate it
9. understand the basic components of an email, be aware of basic email etiquette and
safety, and be able to compose a new message
● Quest 1 – Navigation Tips: Tricks for navigating the 21things4students site and using
the menus. Downloading the Tracking Document that is used to track progress through
the course.
● Quest 2 – Image Capture: Learn how to do a screenshot (PC, Mac, iPad). View the
Screen Capture videos from mistreamnet.org.
● Quest 3 – Shortcuts: Learn keyboard shortcuts.
● Quest 4 – Tech Gymnastics: Take a Typing Test.
● Quest 5 – Safe & Secure: Find out about your school AUP, take a judgement challenge,
and learn more about passwords and user names.
● Quest 6 – Web Browsers: Learn what a Web Browser is, and how to use one.
● Quest 7 – Email: Introduces the concept of Email and covers basic email terms and
functions.
● Quest 8 – Email Etiquette: Covers many of the basic safety and social appropriateness
considerations associated with using Email.
