MIT App Inventor is a free browser based software program for creating mobile apps. The program allows “non-techies” to write computer programs and understand the basic concepts of programming and conceptual thinking. App inventor is well supported and has many free teaching resources available online. Some examples can be found at:

This screencast by USF professor David Wolber demonstrates how to create a simple painting app with App Inventor for Android, the visual programming language. Part 1 shows how touching the screen can cause a circle to be drawn, and how dragging can cause a line to be drawn.
