Final Assignment – MovieMaker

Students will work with a partner to create one of the following:

  1. Option 1: Public Service Announcement (PSA)
    or
  2. Option 2: Poetry in Motion Project

Public Service Announcement (PSA)

Essential Question:
How is digital media used to make a public service announcement? or

How is digital media used to illustrate a poem?

Student Objectives:
Students will be able to:

  • Develop a public service announcement (PSA), write a rough draft, edit the story with feedback from classmates, and finally write and type the final script for the movie.
  • Research, gather, and organize multiple sources of print and nonprint information — such as photos, print media, drawn images and video found online or at home — in order to deepen understanding and integrate information and ideas across varied sources and content areas.
  • Learn about copyrighting issues arising from using print and nonprint sources.
  • Combine voiced script, music and images to create a digital (PSA) movie.

Overview:
Student will make and edit their own videos that deal with important social, economic, and political topics. After viewing examples of online public service announcements (PSAs), students probe the multiple meanings of these video texts by asking challenging, open-ended questions. Students then create short video clips and/or still images and use Windows Movie Maker to edit their videos.

DAY 1
What are Public Service Announcements?

  2. Save Energy – watch April & Malcolm

  4. Parent Control

Student Made Examples:

  1. Mekaya’s Video on The Homeless

Discuss the following:
What is the point of this commercial?
What is the commercial supposed to do?
Are there any other commercials that you’ve seen on television or heard on the radio that have a message – a positive message?  These commercials are called Public Service Announcements (“PSAs”). They are exactly what they sound like – service announcements to the public.  How are these commercials different from other commercials?  (They don’t sell you anything – just offer you advice, bring something to your attention, offer assistance, teach you, etc.)

PSA List of ideas: http://www.teachnet-lab.org/is24/vnacionales/list.htm
What motivates you?
Deciding on a PSA topic that motivates you is critical. Stick to one idea. Find something that you can visualize easily.

2. Review guidelines for writing a public service announcement:

  • be serious
  • have a clear message
  • be no longer than 15-20 seconds  (approximately 45 – 60 words)
  • have important information
  • have accurate information
  • use someone who looks believable
  • use someone who is likeable and respected
  • use someone who can act (is credible)
  • use someone who is dressed appropriately for the part he is playing
  • give statistics (when appropriate, e.g. number of people that die because they were not wearing seatbelts)

3. In MS Word write your draft using the guidelines above. Save your file in your grade folder on the public server in the Final Assignment folder in your grade folder. Each group should create a folder in this folder to save all your work. ALL WORK MUST BE SAVED IN THIS FOLDER

4. Research your topic on the Internet but DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. Please stay on task!

DAY 2
5. Before you shot video or gather still images for your movie I must approve your draft. All drafts are due during the second class of this lesson.

6. Set-up a storyboard layout (this can be done in the same file as your draft) – plan the scenes for your PSA. psa-EXAMPLE-storyboard

7. Work in Windows Movie Maker. When working in MovieMaker your saved movie file and all of your images, video clips, audio, etc. must be in the same folder. When saving anything off the Internet be careful of where you are saving. You must also keep track of any URL’s to create a works cited list/credits.
